Faculty of Law, Universitas Gadjah Mada
ALSA was established in 2015 with the aims of fostering scholarship and engaging the broader research community. It succeeds the East Asian Law and Society Collaborative Research Network (CRN 33) of the Law & Society Association as the regional body.
Its executive office is housed at Waseda University, Japan.
ALSA stands at an opportune moment to develop the Asian law and society field into a vibrant and cohesive discipline, and its annual meetings provide a timely platform to define the field, advance theory, and cultivate empirical work and new scholarship.
The 2025 Annual Meeting of ALSA will be held at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Faculty of Law, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on 11–13 December 2025.
The theme for ALSA 2025, Law and Justice in Asia: Embracing Diversity, Enhancing Equity, invites participants to critically engage with the evolving roles of law in addressing the region’s vast social, cultural, and political diversity. As Asian societies grapple with issues of identity, marginalization, and social justice, this theme underscores the urgent need to foster legal systems that are inclusive and equitable. It encourages reflection on how the law can both reflect and reshape the values of pluralistic societies, while ensuring that justice is accessible to all—regardless of background, status, or identity.
This theme provides a platform to examine how legal institutions, actors, and narratives can work to dismantle structural inequality and promote equity across different communities. It asks: whose lived experiences are reflected in lawmaking and legal interpretation? How can indigenous, gendered, and minority perspectives be integrated into legal education and reform? What mechanisms are available—or must be created—to address the social and economic divides that law often fails to bridge? By examining these questions, the conference aims to open space for diverse legal voices and challenge hegemonic frameworks that have historically shaped legal discourse in Asia.
Participants are encouraged to share research, case studies, and reflections that interrogate the intersection of law, identity, and justice in local and transnational contexts. Whether through doctrinal analysis, comparative law, or community-based legal storytelling, this theme seeks to deepen our collective understanding of how law can serve as both a mirror and a tool for transformation in diverse societies. ALSA 2025 also welcomes proposals on broader themes of law and society in Asia, in the hope of fostering meaningful dialogue and collaborative learning across borders.
